 Energy Savings on Piab Vacuum Transfer Application
This application is on a transfer for electrical enclosures
originally using competitive vacuum pumps. The original
installation used pumps at 80 psig with 3 second ON and 3 second
OFF cycle. Tests
demonstrated that with the use of PIAB P3010AVM with
COAX® Technology,
air consumption could be reduced by over 70% and inlet pressure
reduced to 45 psig.
This solution resulted in an energy savings of $2,075 per year!!

Square D, in
Lexington, has an application with 6
vacuum pumps to transfer electrical enclosures.
This is a 2 shift operation.
Air at 80 psig operates
the vacuum pumps at a 3 second ON and 3 second OFF cycle.
Compressed air is determined to cost $0.32 per 1000 scf.
Based on specifications
for the original vacuum pumps operating for 2 shifts, the annual
energy costs are $2,643.
The
PIAB P3010AVM pump incorporates patented COAX® Technology that
significantly increases the efficiency of the vacuum generation
process. This
efficiency results in using not only less compressed air, but
air at a lower operating pressure.
This combination dramatically lowers the annual operating
costs. The “AVM”designates
“Automatic Vacuum Management” in the model.
AVM result in precise control of the compressed air so it
is used only when needed and for only the time it is needed.
With the PIAB P3010 AVM, the annual energy costs are
$568.
This represents
a reduction in energy of over 70%, a saving of $2,075.
To achieve the
ultimate in energy savings, an option of “ES” for
“energy-saving” is available.
ES is a module that further controls the compressed air.
This works best on sealed
systems and cuts off the compressed air when the preset vacuum
level is achieved.
If leakage occurs, the air supply is turned ON to re-establish
the needed vacuum level.
ES offers the best returns when the ON cycle is of some
duration.
In the current
application, ES represents an additional savings of $142
annually. With this,
the energy reduction is almost 84%.
Square D has
installed (2) PIAB P3010 AVM on their transfer replacing
original equipment and benefitting in lower energy costs.
